Something I said on twitter before the episode aired that ended up ringing true…

Cast/Crew interviews are not meant for us. When EW or TVLine or the like get the chance to interview the cast or the showrunners, the spoilers they are giving to those outlets are NOT meant for those of us deeply entrenched in the fandom. We already know TOO MUCH. That’s why when Dabb says things like (paraphrased) “YOU’LL BE SO SHOCKED BY THE FINALE!” It is important to remember that he isn’t talking to us.

He is talking to the general audience. Those people who are interested in the show enough to read an article about it but not enough to follow set updates or look into meta and foreshadowing too much. 

We are too close to the show to get really ANY new information from those types of interviews (except for maybe the comic-con ones as the season really hasn’t started filming much by then and the writers have to give some info about their plans for the seasons).

So, were we surprised by Michael!Dean? Not particularly. But I’m betting LOADS of casual viewers were shocked. 

I don’t know if that helps at all with anyone who was disappointed by the lack of shock value, but maybe in the future it’ll be easier to discount anyone’s interviews saying it’s gonna SHOCK US? lol idk
