In honour of Fanfic Writer Appreciation Day, I’ve put together this list of some of my favourite hurt!Sam fics. Every one of these fics has pushed me to craft my own writing with as much thought and care as was clearly invested in them by their amazing authors. I hope you find them as gorgeous and inspiring as I do.
Fics are listed in alphabetical order by author name, and include both author summaries (in italics) and my comments. All these authors are superb writers, and I highly recommend checking out their other fanworks as well.
For each rec I have noted: [length | pairing | categories of hurt | major warnings (if needed)]. Most of these fics are gen and contain no sexually explicit content. Do be sure to check the authors’ tags/warnings on each individual fic, though, because there’s some pretty difficult stuff in most of them (all of which is handled beautifully).
Because of the way my stuff is organized, I can only really do lists revolving around Sam/Jared, e.g. “Stories with Sam/Jared being Stalked” as opposed to someone asking for a “stalker!Jensen” rec list.”
I’ve said this before (so I suppose that makes me a liar), but this is the last “Jensen is/has…” rec I will do by request. I’m not trying to be unkind. It is not how my stuff is organized and, having very little free time to hunt around for fics new to me and then read them to verify if they’re bottom!Sam/Jared, I will not have extensive offerings.

Jensen wakes up from a coma and doesn’t remember his fiance Jared or any of their time together. Jensen’s high-society parents never liked that their golden son has fallen in love with the ‘poor, orphaned, uneducated trash.’ They consider him a gold-digger, and now they see the opportunity to get rid of him.
They pay the doctors to say that Jensen shouldn’t be forced to remember. They clear Jensen’s house of everything Jared, including the man himself.
With no family, and no friends (Jared is made to believe Jensen’s friends don’t care for him), Jared struggles to put his life together.
Jensen wakes up with no memory of the last ten years…as if someone took an eraser and erased those years off his memory page. What’s even more irritating is the fact that no-one around him..his parents, best friends Chris and Steve and Misha have agreed to open up. But it’s clear that they are hiding something. It’s the doctor who advised everyone not to pressure him into remembering as it may worsen his head trauma. Every morning he finds a beautiful hazel eyed man sitting at his bedside. He talks to Jensen, makes him smile and takes care of him. From his uniform appears to be a nurse…and soon Jensen falls in love with him. The man, Jared also has a little baby son and a husband. Jensen can’t be a home wrecker but finds himself falling further. He feels that the dilemma will kill him. Just when he feels his world shattering…his memory comes back. Jared’s his husband. (warning: there is a child in this and, judging by his physical description, is a product of mpreg, although it is never stated)
Your Wish, My Pleasure by mishapshappen on Ao3. Jared/Jensen. J2 AU. In the future, it’s all the rage to order a specially designed robot to satisfy your child’s physical needs until they meet their mate. Jared is gifted with Jensen on his 18th birthday. Jensen is perfect in every way, and everything that Jared wants in a mate, but he’s not human. They fall in love, which is a difficult process because Jensen has been designed to not feel love, but somehow he overrides his own programming to truly love Jared.Not everyone is happy with this arrangement. When Jensen goes to the robot shop for routine maintenance, Jared’s father sabotages him, wiping his memory and strengthening his coding about professional relationships with his client.

Out in the woods on a camping trip, Sam and Dean can’t keep off each other despite their Dad being a mere two thin layers of nylon and a very short distance away.
Their ages aren’t specified in the fic, but in my head Sam’s about 15 here, and Dean about 19. There are some firsts here but their first real foray into incest occurred one week before this fic takes place.
John Winchester has never been Father of the Year – especially to Sam, who he blames for Mary’s death. He finally crosses the line and comes unhinged when he finds out his boys are sleeping together, and poor Sam cops the full force of his rage, forcing Dean to take his baby brother and hit the road to save both their hides. The damage is already done, though, and Sammy has some pretty serious wounds – mental and physical. He’s just starting to get himself together in the safe haven of Sioux Falls when John tracks them down, determined to finish what he started, and Dean is forced to do something drastic to protect his baby brother. (No spoilery warning details here, beyond that it was written for a hardcore Big Bang. I can tell you it’s complete, though…)

His whole life, Dean Winchester travels through time, forwards and backwards, but he always comes back to Sam. Dean doesn’t believe in destiny, but if it does exist, his is Sam. This story is inspired by Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time-Traveler’s Wife.

Author Jensen Ackles is all kinds of specific with the details of his life. He likes privacy, writing, and coffee; black, no sugar, hold the cream. He’s become a fixture at the local coffee shop, writing from his table every day for the past two years. His vices include routine, neatness, and structure. Jensen doesn’t do messes. Then there is Jared, recent post-grad basket case, who’s been coming in every day for caffeine he doesn’t need and bringing the increasing disaster in his life with him. Jared is a mess in all the ways Jensen is not and so Jensen offers to help Jared in the only way he knows how: by buying Jared a cup of coffee. ♥♥ Beholder – NC-17 – Word Count: ~80,000 – Jared was passionate about the work he did with the animal shelter. Between that and living with Sandy, life was satisfactory. Until the cold night that the filthy, homeless man hidden in an oversized hoodie was dumped at the shelter and Jared couldn’t just turn him out. Even if the man roared and called himself ‘Beast.’ Because under the hood, Jared was sure he caught a glimpse of a prince in those green eyes.
Change Your Name and Come Seek Me – NC-17 – Word Count: ~37,500 – Sometimes, you have to die in order be with the one you love. Jared Padalecki is just your average guy next door, except for his ability to bring people back to life after successfully preventing their death. When he meets Jensen, all he wants is to live a ordinary life. Only, Jensen has a secret of his own, and soon, Jared’s life becomes even more complicated.
Empty Room – NC-17 – Word Count: 45,666 – Jared’s life felt like it was slowly falling into pieces, slipping right through his fingers and he didn’t even know why.What he did know was that there had to be a reason why he would always find his dogs scratching at the door to the empty room in his house. Why he would hesitate so many times before driving off to set simply because it felt wrong somehow to go alone. Why he would dream of this one guy he’d never met, but who, in his dreams, felt like a man he had spent a lifetime with. The Play Nice Proviso – NC-17 – Word Count: ~70,000 – When Jensen Ackles first met Jared Padalecki, it was most definitely not love at first sight. It wasn’t even like at first sight. In fact, Jensen hated him, and he had a few good reasons as to why. So what if his new co-star was oblivious to his one-sided warfare? Jensen could deal. Apart from when he couldn’t.
Here For The Moment – NC-17 – Word Count: 34,751 – When Jensen crashes into Jared’s life, quite literally, Jared is only too happy to go along for the ride. What starts as a happy twist of fate leads into something more, and Jared soon realizes his feelings for Jensen are only getting stronger with time. But Jensen is caught up in a past that Jared can’t be a part of, and being happy in love ends up being more complicated than Jared thought.
Spin The Light To Gold – NC-17 – Word Count: 52,000 – It’s Jared’s first summer as a junior counselor at an idyllic summer camp, and he’s looking forward to as much sun and fun as he can handle. But things don’t turn out exactly as he plans, and his summer takes an interesting turn when he finds himself falling for a hot older counselor. Featuring Chad, crafts, hordes of kids, and all the summer camp cliches imaginable.
Incriminating Evidence – NC-17 – Word count: ~34,000 – Roommates!fic. Jared’s not really a nosy guy except for the times when he is.
♥ The Courtship of Jensen’s Co-Star – NC-17 – Word count: 112K+ – Somewhere in the time between a handshake and a hug, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki went from being reel-life brothers to real-life best friends, and complete strangers to cosmic soul mates, no rhyme or reason to it that either of them could ever see. Jared was everything Jensen was not: friendly, funny, and full of life; one in six-point-whatever billion the Earth’s population currently stood at. Life was awesome. Work was amazing. Everything was fine until Jared kissed Jensen. Everything was peachy until Jensen fell in love.
Thespis – NC-17 – Word Count: 36,141 – Jared is a makeup artist and is hired for a new movie based in Vancouver. Jensen plays the part of a hardcore, punk-rock star, but he has a real-life attitude problem. Unfortunately, Jared can’t figure out why and still finds Jensen attractive.
The Lie That Keeps You Warm – NC-17 – Word Count: 72,977 – Jensen is a Hollywood actor who’s quickly fading out of the spotlight. To create a new buzz, his agent suggests a double whammy tabloid shocker; Jensen Ackles is getting married… to a guy. But of all the people his agent picks to be his “groom-to-be”, Jensen didn’t expect it to be Jared Padalecki, the once dorky kid he used to bully in high school.
So I Called Chad – NC-17? – Word Count: ~30,000 – Jensen has a car accident, but Jared’s the one who gets hurt.
♥ Royally Complicated – NC-17 – Word Count: 52,200 – Jensen’s completely sick of his completely dull life; despite a great apartment, a job he loves, and well-intentioned friends who want nothing but the best for him, he’s bored out of his skull. When those well-intentioned friends drunkenly book him a trip to beautiful and exotic Los Roques, Venezuela, Jensen figures he’ll make the best of it, and if that happens to include a fling with a handsome and mysterious stranger he never expects to see again, so much the better.
