The first time he saw Jess, he was pretty drunk. Later, he’d be ashamed of himself because drunk was not often a state he found himself in, but tonight Brady had insisted. Insisted, he said, because there were going to be a lot of hot girls around and Sam had to loosen up somehow. “Trust me, Sam,” the exact quote had been, “you are NOT a ladies man.” Not that Sam had any interest in being a ladies man – in fact, he was far more interested in getting good grades and preparing for the rest of his life. But Brady had insisted. Again.

So just to satisfy his friend, Sam did as was requested and downed four bottles of beer and three shots in quick succession. Honestly, if he let himself think about it, Sam knew he didn’t want to be drunk because it reminded him of his father, but he pushed that thought to the side and focused instead on the burn currently searing itself into his throat.

It was shortly after he’d decided that leaning against the counter was a better life choice than trying to stand alone on his own two feet that Brady entered the room, escorting the most beautiful woman Sam had ever laid eyes on. “Oh, hey,” his equally as drunk friend had slurred in his general direction, sweeping one hand out toward his companion in introduction as though Sam wasn’t already completely enthralled, “this is Jess. Jess, Sam, a friend of mine.”
